Common Grooming Questions Answered: What Every Dog Owner Needs to Know

Common Dog Grooming Questions Answered by a Professional

As a professional groomer, I get asked a lot of questions about dog grooming, and I’m always happy to help! Grooming is about more than just a clean dog; it’s about keeping your pet’s coat and skin healthy and looking its best. Here are some of the most common questions I get asked, along with my expert answers!

1. My dog only needs shampoo, right?

Answer: False!
Shampooing your dog’s coat is important, but it’s only part of the process. Your dog’s coat and skin need conditioning to stay healthy and hydrated. Conditioner doesn’t just moisturise—it also helps to detangle and smooth out the hair cuticle, making the coat more manageable. It’s essential for removing knots and tangles, especially in longer or curly coats.
And yes, you still need to brush your dog’s coat before, during, and after the drying process. Conditioning helps keep your dog’s coat looking whiter and healthier because it closes the cuticles on the hair shaft, which helps to repel dirt. So, never skip conditioner!

2. I only wash my dog with warm water to preserve their natural oils. Is that OK?

Answer: Not exactly!

Shampooing is essential. It removes built-up dirt, oils, and odour, and it also helps remove dead skin cells and old coat. This process actually promotes the growth of new, healthy skin and coat.
Washing your dog allows the natural oils from the sebaceous glands to be distributed throughout their skin, so shampooing is crucial for maintaining healthy skin and a shiny coat. Regular bathing doesn’t harm their natural oils—it helps keep everything in balance!

3. My dog cries and bites when I try to brush her. What should I do?

Answer: This is a common issue, but don’t worry—it’s fixable!

If your dog is crying or biting when brushed, it’s likely because they associate brushing with pain due to knots. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be that way. You need to start the grooming process before the coat becomes a tangled mess.
Try brushing your dog regularly, even when they don’t have knots, to help them get used to the sensation. Use gentle strokes and reward your dog for good behaviour. If the coat is already tangled, use the right tools (a slicker brush, a metal comb) and take your time. Be patient, and soon your dog will start to associate brushing with positive experiences, like treats and attention.
Remember: teaching your dog how to be brushed can make a huge difference in how they respond over time.

4. Does my dog really need a winter coat during the colder months?

Answer: Yes, but with conditions!

While it’s true that your dog’s coat may thicken naturally during the colder months, this doesn’t mean you should stop grooming or bathing them for six months. In fact, regular grooming is essential even in winter.
Even dogs that shed still need to have their dead coat removed. If you don’t brush out the old, dead hair, it can become matted and heavy, trapping moisture against your dog’s skin. If your dog gets wet, a matted coat can prevent the air from reaching the skin, which can lead to skin infections. So, yes, your dog still needs to be brushed and washed during the winter to keep them comfortable and healthy.

5. I’ve been brushing my dog, but he still has knots. Why?

Answer: You might not be brushing deeply enough!

If your dog still has knots after brushing, it’s likely because you’re not brushing all the way down to the skin. A proper brush should separate the coat, reaching right down to the base of the hair to loosen up tangles from the roots.
It’s also important to use the right tools for your dog’s coat type. Some coats require specific brushes or combs, and your groomer can show you exactly what you should be using for the best results. A slicker brush, for example, works well for long-haired or curly coats, while de-shedding tools are great for double coated breed or coats with thick underscoat.
If you’re not sure which tools to use, ask your groomer—they can guide you in the right direction!

Conclusion: Healthy Skin and a Happy Coat

Grooming is an essential part of your dog’s care routine and understanding the why behind it can help you make the right choices for their health and comfort. Regular brushing, conditioning, and bathing are all key to keeping your dog looking and feeling great. Don’t forget to ask your groomer for tips on the best tools and techniques for your dog’s specific coat type. If you’ve got more questions, don’t hesitate to ask! Every dog is unique, and we’re here to help you give them the best care possible.
