A Groomer's Guide to Shear Types

Straight Shears: Ideal for all around scissoring. Standard straight shears have a narrow blade that is suitable for light or fine coats. Wider 88-style or Filipino-style shears are ideal for coarser, heavier coats or pre-bath applications.  

Curved Shears: Curved shears make it easier to scissor in rounded areas. Shorter curved shears are ideal for topknots and tails, while longer curved shears are great for shaping the barrel of a Standard Poodle. 

Thinning Shears: These shears have a cutting edge on one blade and teeth on the other. This allows the blade to cut in a slightly irregular pattern, which provides a more natural, varied look than a straight scissor cut. Shears with less than 40 teeth are ideal for bulk thinning. Shears with more than 40 teeth are better for blending.
